I've seen several different posts about how to make your own softbox, and I was curious how well it worked. Unless you are going to make a full business or really use them, I thought this might be a neat way around spending a ton of money for lighting.
I, as a business owner actually need to buy the nice softbox and different lighting sets, but since I started this blog, I've been thinking about photography from a hobbyist point of view. As a mom who like nice pictures of my children, I thought this would be a fun experiment to see if I could get a nice professional look from a homemade softbox.
This is the link I used to kind of base my idea from.
Since I do have some basic lighting, I thought I'd use that as my base instead of a flash. I think certain lamps might work as well.
First I decided how big I wanted it, and I cut out the back panel. The original site doesn't have an actual back panel, but I did make some modifications in mine. Then I started making my four sides. Once I had everything drawn up and cut out of cardboard, I covered one side with aluminum foil. I taped it all together, and covered the backside with a dark colored tape. I plan on painting it black to help keep the light leaks to a minimum, but since I was curious about if this would actually work, I didn't take the time to paint it yet.
I used a box I had laying around the house, and thanks to my awesome Abel & Cole deliveries, I had something I could use!
This was my final product! The small circle in the back is where my softbox will fit onto my light.
Now that it was all together, and I'll admit it looked pretty nice, it was time to see if it actually works. I will admit, I was impressed with how well this worked. I was using one studio light for this, and it was pretty bright. I used a black piece of fabric as my backdrop.
Here are a few shots I took using this light only...
Now I hope this helps, and possibly inspires some of y'all to try it! It's a cheap way to achieve high quality shots. I know every mom out there that enjoys photography as a hobby will enjoy trying this because lets face it, we all want awesome shots of our kiddos...
Feel free to leave me some comments on your thoughts, and experiences if you try this!
