I picked up a new photography book at the BX and have been doing some
reading in it! I must say I am really enjoying it also! I would
recommend this book especially if you are just starting out. The
beginning of the book is great for beginners.
One of the things I thought I'd share is about composition. I found what the author had to say very interesting... I will be paraphrasing....
"Advice on picture composition tends to be prescriptive ( place the subject at the intersection of thirds) and proscriptive (don't put the subject in the center) as if the adherence to a few rules can guarantee satisfactory composition. It's better to think of rules as distillation of ideas about the structure of images. The most effective way to ensure a striking composition is to look fro the key ingredients of a scene and organize your camera position and exposure to draw those elements out. Composition is about how to frame the picture, how to use aperture to control depth of field, how to focus to lead the viewer's attention, and how you use light and shade to shape your image. If you are new to photography it may help to concentrate your attention on general structure."
So basically just because you adhere to the Rule of 3rds doesn't mean you will have an awesome picture. There are many things that go into creating a great composition. If you found this exert informative, I suggest buying this book!
